New Horizons Respite Service

Respite Service The New Horizons Respite Service (NHRS) exists to assist individuals with developmental disabilities to make successful connections in the community and to provide respite to their family member who is acting as a primary caregiver. A support staff in the NHRS facilitates the development, coordination, advertisement, implementation and evaluation of events and activities for individuals. The ultimate goal of NHRS is to provide individuals on the community wait list for residential services and their families with opportunities to spend time away from each other, which in turn fosters independence and self-fulfillment. Individuals take part in activities developed from expressed interests and the feedback of participants and potential participants.

Each person is responsible for their own admissions, meals and out of the community transportation expenses as well as any additional expenses at each event. NACL assists people with transportation as required and available. A transportation service will is available one time monthly to allow people eligible for the service and living in the outskirts of the community with an opportunity to attend a monthly social function, which is regularly scheduled at the Moose Lodge.

The service is available to individuals who are currently on the community waiting list for residential services of any sort in the community of Norfolk County.

A Counsellor II staff of the Norfolk Association for Community Living is available to perform a discovery meeting with individuals interested in the service.
